If you do a game controller, you should def go with the original Nintendo NES.

First thing I thought when I saw him.
"Hey that's not fair, he can hold two controllers."

I definitely like the idea of doing an original Nintendo game controller. I also rather like your use of the chess piece with board gaming, because a lot of people, while they think of board games as gaming, don't think about a lot of the classic games like Chinese Checkers or Chess. The general shape of the wings is good, though with the tilt of his head, it makes me curious as to what he's looking at, the world below him, or something else?
